The Australia India Society of Victoria (AISV) successfully hosted the “Australia and India: United in Tradition” luncheon at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on 26th January 2025, celebrating Australia Day and India’s 76th Republic Day.
The event brought together esteemed dignitaries, community leaders, and attendees from diverse backgrounds to reflect, respect, and celebrate the deep-rooted ties between Australia and India. The atmosphere was filled with harmony, dignity, and cultural pride, creating a memorable and enriching experience for all.
This memorable event welcomed distinguished guests, including:
• Hon. Julian Hill MP, representing the Prime Minister of Australia.
• Dr. Sushil Kumar, Consul General of India, Melbourne.
• Hon. Brad Battin, Leader of the Opposition, Victoria.
• Melissa Kay, Department of Home Affairs.
• Mayor Cr Pradeep Trivedi, Mayor of Maribyrnong.
• Kano Ravalji, Victorian Multicultural Commission.
•Usman Ghani, representing the Leader of the Opposition, Australia.


Key Highlights:
The event began with a heartfelt “Welcome to Country” delivered by Uncle Shane Charles, setting a respectful and inclusive tone. This was followed by stirring renditions of the Australian and Indian national anthems, symbolizing the deep ties between the two nations. Dignitaries then took the stage, delivering inspiring speeches that underscored the significance of multiculturalism and the enduring collaboration between Australia and India. Adding to the evening’s grandeur, captivating cultural performances showcased the rich traditions of both countries, creating a truly immersive and celebratory experience.

AISV’s first female President, Anou Khanijou McPherson, delivered her inaugural address, acknowledging the organization's remarkable contributions since its inception in 1963, stating:
"Our focus and vision are clear: we will engage with the youth, nurture the next generation of Indian migrants, and be a steadfast presence for our community in times of need."

A special tribute honored the late Dr. Gurdip Aurora, AISV’s former Chairman and longest-serving President, in the presence of his family. Dignitaries presented a commemorative plaque in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the community, which was received with a poignant message from his daughter, Dr. Meera Aurora.

The event received overwhelming appreciation from attendees, who praised the harmonious blend of Australian and Indian cultures, creating a truly inclusive celebration. Many highlighted the dignified and respectful atmosphere, which reinforced a strong sense of unity and multiculturalism. The iconic MCG setting added prestige and pride to the occasion, further elevating its significance. Additionally, the seamless organization and meticulous attention to detail ensured a memorable experience for all.
